SPFA Board of Directors Announces Honorary Members for 2023
In April 2023, the SPFA Board granted honorary lifetime membership status to eight fully-retired members of the alliance. This was done as our expression of gratitude for their longstanding contributions to the Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance that have helped us achieve our mission of growing the spray foam insulation and roofing industry. This is an award that is reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and commitment to our cause, and they are more than deserving of this honor.

Bob Buzzard
Bob was the owner of All American Enterprises, an SPF roofing contractor based in Albuquerque, NM. Bob retired in 2020 and was a key member of SPFA’s predecessor, the Polyurethane Foam Contractors Division (PFCD) of The Society for Plastic Industries (SPI) PFCD/SPI. Bob served as PFCD President from 1991 to 1993.

Buddy Cockrell

Buddy co-founded RPC Industries, Inc. in 1979 in Hampton, Virginia to serve the industrial construction market. His leadership fostered creativity and growth of the entire team at RPC Industries, Inc. and his vision is what lead the company into spray foam from the very beginning. Over the years, Buddy’s expertise in spray foam has been called on countlessly. He has served as PFCD President from 1986 to 1987 and was an industry-expert presenter at an international polyurethanes conference in Germany for our trade association. Buddy has also worked on research projects with NIOSH and OSHA for the industry’s benefit over the years. Buddy sold the company in 2019 but still offers his advice and knowledge as often as the company or the SPFA calls.

Brad Houlden

Brad along with his wife Shirley were owners of Houlden Contracting based in Imperial, NE installing SPF insulation and roofing systems. Brad’s relationship with SPFA started with the then PFCD in 1990 when he joined the Technical Committee and later served as the committee chair. Brad was elected to the PFCD Board of Directors and helped with the creation of an independent trade association that we know today as SPFA. He served as the first vice-president of SPFA from 2004 to 2006 and subsequently as SPFA President from 2006 to 2008. He served on the that board of directors of SPFA for several terms through 2022 and helped establish the SPFA Convention Planning Committee. Brad and Shirley announced their retirement from their business in 2023.
Mason Knowles

Mason began his SPF career at age 17, working for his father’s spray foam business founded in 1962, which was one of the first SPF contractors in the US.  He joined the Technical Committee in 1987 and worked on guidelines for cold storage. Mason was General Manager of UCSC from 1993 to 1995 before becoming Technical Director for PFCD. From 1997 to 1999, he managed the Sales and Technology departments for Gusmer.  In 2003, he became Technical Director then Director of the newly formed SPFA. Mason’s contributions include changes to the model building codes and numerous ASTM standards, managing research programs to promote the use of SPF insulation and roofing, as well as primary author for six of SPFA’s TechDocs. Upon leaving SPFA in 2008, Mason became the first SPF consultant, as the founder of Mason Knowles Consulting, until his retirement in January 2023.

Ed Lundin
Ed was the owner and president of Lundin Roofing located in Port Allen, LA.  Ed was a key member of the board of PFCD and the SPFD, serving as PFCD President for two terms from 1994-1998, as well as the first SPFA President from 2004-2006.

Roger Morrison

Roger started with NCFI in 1987, retiring in 2008. Prior to joining NCFI, Roger worked for a roof coating company to develop acrylic roof coatings for SPF.  At NCFI, he developed NCFI’s SPF roofing program. Throughout his career, Roger was involved in numerous national research projects, hurricane resistance of SPF roofs, the wind uplift strength of SPF as the insulation on the interior of roof decks and served as a key member of the committee to develop AC 377 Appendix X, as well as chair of the IAPMO Technical Subcommittee that developed IAPMO ES1000 standard for spray foam roofing and insulation systems. Roger has made countless contributions to many SPFA technical projects, TechDocs and our Professional Certification Program, serving as chair of the Technical Oversight Committee.

Melvin Stumler
Melvin was one of the founders of Insulated Roofing Contractors (IRC) headquartered in New Albany, IN. Melvin had an active role with SFPA’s immediate predecessor, the Spray Polyurethane Foam Division (SPFD) formed under Center for the Polyurethane Industry (CPI) under the American Plastics Council (APC). Melvin served as SPFD President from 2002 to 2004 just before the formation of SPFA.

Irvin Stumler

Irvin was one of the founders of Insulated Roofing Contractors (IRC) headquartered in New Albany, IN. Irvin sold his stake in IRC in 1992 but was an instrumental part of SPFA’s predecessor, the Polyurethane Foam Contractors Division (PFCD) of The Society for Plastic Industries (SPI) PFCD/SPI. Irv served as PFCD President from 1987 to 1990. During his term, Irv stressed quality performance and was successful in instituting the Accreditation Program for PFCD Contractors. Irv also urged Polyurethane Roofing Contractors to become members of NRCA. As a result of this growing membership and improved performance the Polyurethane Roofing System was included in the NRCA Roofing Manual.

The SPFA Board thanks all these new honorary members for their support and contributions to the SPFA and the greater spray foam industry. It means more to us than words can express, and we look forward to continuing our work together for many years to come.
If you know of a retired SPFA member that has made significant contributions to the Alliance and would like to nominate them for honorary membership, please contact Bonnie Strickler, SPFA President.
