Fairfax, VA.  The Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance (SPFA) is pleased to announce the hiring of Mr. Richard Duncan as the new full-time SPFA Technical Director.  Mr. Duncan will be joining the SPFA team as of 15 September 2008, and take on management of all technical, engineering and related activities.

“As the new President of the SPFA Board, I am extremely excited about Mr. Duncan, and the exceptional skills and network that he brings to the association,” stated Sean Stumler, President SPFA.  “His timing couldn’t be better,” he added, “as SPFA embarks on a record number of critical technical activities, his leadership will certainly benefit me as a contractor member, and the entire SPF industry.”

Mr. Duncan, when asked how he feels about this new opportunity, stated he “see(s) this new position as a great opportunity to grow the industry by increasing product awareness and demonstrating the value of SPF to builders, architects, code officials and homeowners.” One of the areas Mr. Duncan believes is the greatest challenge today “is to make new and existing buildings more energy efficient - using technologies that are durable and minimize environmental impact.”  He continues, “SPF meets these demands exactly.  Market share is increasing, demonstrated by the growth we currently see despite today's declining construction market.  Additionally, I see great potential to expand the use of SPF for applications outside the construction industry.”

“This is such a critical time for the industry and the association,” said Kurt Riesenberg, Executive Director, SPFA.  “For us to continue supporting the growth in the industry, we need to address all technical challenges and assure the longevity of the association’s influence.  We need a top-performer like Mr. Duncan working for the members - period.”

Mr. Duncan was most-recently Senior Marketing Manager for Honeywell Spray Foam Insulation group and served as Chair for the Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance’s (SPFA) Building Envelope Committee, as well as the SPFA Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Task Force.  From 1997 to 2006, he worked for CertainTeed and Saint-Gobain Corporation, where he was the Director of Laboratory Services for CertainTeed Insulation and Global Program Manager for Saint-Gobain Insulation’s New Materials and Applications Program.  Prior to joining Saint-Gobain, Mr. Duncan was a Visiting Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Bucknell University. He holds a Ph.D. in Engineering Science and Mechanics from Penn State, Masters in Mechanical Engineering from Bucknell University, and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland.  He is also a Registered Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania, Colorado and Utah.

Mr. Duncan offered that in this role, he “plan(s) to educate industry professionals and promote technical product safety, performance, durability and environmental awareness.  Incorporating sound scientific practices,” he adds, “we can work together through SPFA to address any issues, and strengthen the technical foundations that lead to the selection of SPF in favor of other products.”
